LGF Project Delivered

Project Completion Date

Summer 2021

This project will facilitate the establishment of the Kent and Medway Medical School. This facility will provide an innovative centre for medical education and research to develop the health and social care workforce, drive productivity and innovation in the health economy and contribute to the development of the ‘medical corridor’ envisaged by the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission. The Kent and Medway Medical School will be delivered by Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent, together with local health providers.  It will include new education and research facilities, located on two sites in Canterbury. The project will deliver:

  • 2,476 sqm of lecture theatre, classroom, anatomy and clinical skills simulation laboratory space at the Canterbury Christ Church University Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine facility; and
  • 2,320 sqm of lecture theatre, IT suites, seminar rooms, meeting rooms and office space at the University of Kent campus.

The Government approved an application for the Kent and Medway Medical School in 2018, which unlocks revenue funding in 2020/21 for an initial cohort of 100 medical students. However, this approval is not accompanied by any capital funding to deliver the required facilities.

Award of additional LGF funding

The LGF COVID-19 response fund was established to support those existing LGF projects which were experiencing a funding gap due to cost increases or loss of local funding sources as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. A new LGF project pipeline, consisting of existing LGF projects, was agreed by the Strategic Board in December 2020 and will be used as the basis for awarding all currently unallocated LGF funding.

This project was included on the new LGF project pipeline and the award of an additional £1m LGF was approved by Accountability Board on 12th February 2021.
