Launch of 2018-2023 skills strategy

South East LEP Skills Strategy

On 21st September the South East LEP will launch their new five-year strategy to develop the skilled workforce needed to help deliver inclusive growth across East Sussex, Essex, Kent, Medway, Southend and Thurrock.

The launch event will be held at East Kent college’s Folkestone campus at a joint event that will also celebrate the opening of their college’s new construction training facilities.

You will have the opportunity to hear more about SELEP’s vision and priorities for skills as well as the evidence base supporting the strategy.

SELEP and partners are committed to delivering against the Industrial Strategy, recognising the key role skills plays in driving productivity. The Industrial Strategy’s commitment to supporting all in society throughout their working lives is welcomed and aligns to the SELEP ambition for an inclusive economy.

Great opportunity, great challenge

Demand for skills in the South East is strong, sectors like health and care have current shortages, these are set to increase with an ageing and growing population. Equally our size and location mean we are an area of national and international significance and instrumental to keeping goods and services moving in the UK. Our productivity impacts on the national picture.

For the SELEP economy to become more productive and for skills levels to improve, many in SELEP’s communities will require additional, in-depth support and facilities. Positively, there is already large-scale commitment to respond to challenges from employers, local authorities, education providers and the voluntary sector. As the largest LEP in the country, this represents
a public / private partnership on a significant scale.

Our new skills strategy firmly grasps the nettle of these challenges and the environment of opportunity that exists with a firm focus on building a fist class skills system and a strong and inclusive economy.
