Local Authority Business Grant Payments
SELEP received a total initial allocation (IA) of £944,776,000 through the Small Business Grants Fund (SBGF) and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business Grants Fund (RHLGF) schemes which closed in August 2020. Final figures published in November showed that at 30th September the total value of business support grants paid in SELEP was £803,205,000 with Wealden district having the highest at over £41m.

As of 5th October, over 91,000 businesses had also received loans worth over £3.5bn under the government’s two largest Covid-19 loan schemes, the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme and the Bounce Back Loan Scheme.View the source data for COVID-19 loan schemes in SELEP area
SELEP COVID-19 Business Recovery Survey
The SELEP COVID-19 Business Recovery Survey ran from mid-May to the end of July. It showed 32% of business that responded had temporarily closed with a further 8% indefinitely closed. 35% were also predicting that their staffing levels would decrease with 25% unsure of the impact on their staffing. However, there were also some positive indications about businesses’ capacity to adapt and in some cases to respond to new opportunities as shown in the responses below.View the source data from the SELEP COVID-19 Business Recovery Survey
- The SELEP Growth Hub supported more business engagements in the period April – June 2020 than in the previous year combined. Although they are still lower than their peak in April, the number of enquiries rose significantly between October and November.
- Responses to Growth Hub questionnaires show a rise in the number of job losses being reported with the retail sector now reporting the largest numbers, followed by tourism and hospitality and professional and business services.
